horror film fashion:: the eyes of laura mars

Ok. So, I am sure you're thinking, "um, d.j.r.d. that flick is not technically a horror film" to which I say, perhaps not according to the video store's definition but ponder this - you are strolling along the street minding your own business when suddenly your vision is replaced by someone else's - suddenly you are behind the eyes of (in the words of the great David Byrne) a psycho-killer and can do nothing but look on as innocent victims, most of whom you know, are stabbed to death (in the eyes with sharp pointy objects)!
eek...sounds pretty horror-esque, non?

So without further ado, the last installment of horror film fashion: Miss Faye Dunaway in the Eyes of Laura Mars.

Faye stars as Laura Mars, fashion forward photographer whose images often depict violent crime scenes using tres risqué styling. All is fabulous, that is until Laura begins having disturbing and murderous visions (as described above). And what's worse, she's forced to receive said visions at random which render her helpless as her closest pals are being brutally murdered. Yet she manages to look fabulous even whilst her world crumbles around her. How does she do it?

POP goes the magazine

I love the latest cover of POP magazine - the 20th anniversary issue, in fact - with coverstar Drew Barrymore (and co-coverstar a lil white bunny) it's a little nod to grunge and perhaps Alice in Wonderland? (leave it to me to read into anything and say it's "alice in wonderland" influenced - but come one, who doesn't love alice?)
I was sad to learn that POP magazine is going on a "hiatus" (whatever that means) from now until 2009 and that editor, Katie Grand and basically all of her staff have left the publlication.

While I don't buy POP that often (I read bits of it online instead) I am, more often then not, quite satiated by the modernist layout and
funky editorials. According to their publisher, POP will return - but will it be the same? not very likely.

Katie Grand and co. will be launching a new magazine in Spring of 09 which is reportedly title LOVE. I can only hope that LOVE will fill the void if POP is, in fact, dead in the water.

icon(oclasts) stella

the few times I have actually managed to catch the Sundance TV series, Iconoclasts I have thoroughly enjoyed it. The often odd pairing of subjects can sometimes lead to awkwardness, sometimes brilliance, sometimes both. None the less, this is one television show I always find very interesting (disclaimer:: this coming from someone who's limits her tv intake quite a bit and whose tv is forever locked on either cnn or a design show of some sort).

I learned Stella McCartney had done episode opposite Artist, Ed Ruscha about a month ago and then, like clockwork, I forgot. Thus when it aired last thursday, even though I was probably sitting around doing nothing, I missed it. thank goodness for on demand, for tonight I found the episode sitting there waiting for me. hooray!

I love stella for so many reasons (even ones not having to do with her dad or the cruelty-free-ness of her products, I swear!). It was very cool to see her passion for her work and for someone else's work up close like that. I very much recommend at least watching this little clip from the episode if you are at all a fan.

UPDATE: it's available on itunes, or so I am told, for all those w/out access to Sundance Channel.

usa is a-ok...or something like that.

Turns out I won't be here on election day so I had to vote by mail. I just strolled down to ye ol' mailbox and sent my little ballot off in the safe arms of "Joe the mailman" (seriously, that's his name - the humor of this fact is not at all lost on me).

So there you have it, I voted and I feel like I've done my little part. fingers-crossed.

under the influence

While I am not that big of an Olsen fanatic I have been more or less interested since Mary-Kate got experimental with fashion back in 2004 and even more so since they started the Row and E&J. Even though I don't consider myself an avid follower I am somewhat interested in getting a copy of their new book Influence - if not merely for the fact that they interviewed Lauren Hutton (who I hope to be exactly like when I am her age - she rocks), Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano and Christian Louboutin (to name a few) for the book.

"We interviewed the people who have inspired us, with the hope that they will inspire and teach others," Mary-Kate said. "We want to explain culturally how ideas evolve."

The book also includes photos and drawings provided by the interviewees, as well as never-before-seen photos of the ladies.
So I don't know, I think I am going to go for it. What's one more cool fashion related coffee table book, right? the only question is do I want the version with m-k on the front or Ashley? hmm... tough one.

you can listen to them talk about the book a bit here

le sang des betes

le sang des betes is the brainchild of la-based designer Trang Chau. I have seen her designs in a few magazines and one or two street-style blogs recently.  I love the structure of her pieces; they are practically buildings or monuments to style. That in mind, it did not come as a shock to discover that Trang is also a sculptor.

here are a few pieces from the fall/winter 08 collection (needless to say, I want them all). enjoy...

flowers in her hair

I am such a gemini when it comes to my wardrobe. No, really... I can't settle on one single style (eg: edgy, vintage, nerdy, uber girlie, the list goes on) yet somehow it all ends up looking like "me" - if that makes any sense whatsoever. It's a mash-up of sorts that strangely falls into place pretty well most days/weeks. Perhaps subconsciously I actually do know what I am doing? (gasp) what a thought!

This being said I oftentimes fall in love with looks I see even if they are style-type specific and try my best to incorporate them. Take for example my recent infatuation with faux flowers as hair accessories . There is no escaping the uber girl connotation that flowers bring (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I'm just not a fan of putting people into boxes) yet I think have managed to make the look work with my semi-bipolar style and I'm not the only one to make them work... me

cmj

Today CMJ kicks off in New York and, though I won't be able to make it this year, I have been checking out the official site and reading various articles here and there - wishing I could be there. Mostly I just want to go back to New York because it's been a while.

So...what does this mean for you? you might ask. Well, I thought I would feature a couple of new bands playing CMJ this year that maybe of interest:

The Ruby Suns are a band from New Zealand though the singer, Ryan McPhun, is apparently from California originally. They released a new album called Sea Lion this year - from what I have heard they are quite eclectic. For those of you lucky enough to be in New York the Ruby Suns play tonight at the Delancy (9:15pm) and again on Saturday the 25th at Pianos (12:15am).
Boomp3.com

Passion Pit are out of Cambridge, MA. I don't know too much more about them aside from the fact that they currently have an EP called Chunk of Change and they are working on a full length which will be released in 2009. They too have a show tonight at the Music Hall of Williamsburg (10:20) and a second show on Thursday at the Annex (10:30pm).

Of course, there are many other bands that I love who are playing but these two are newbies. enjoy.

horror film fashion: the hunger

For round two of horror film fashion I thought I'd go for the villain rather than the victim. Enter Miriam, Catherine Deneuve's creepy yet genteel character in The Hunger. Deneuve plays a 2000 year old Egyptian vampire who still manages to look classy and chic even whilst relieving her lovers of their blood and their livelihood.

I love the splashes of 1940s/50s fashion that many Gothic 1980s movies had (eg: blade runner) and the Hunger is no exception.

i tired to rock you, you only roll

I've got one busy weekend ahead of me and it all technically started last night with a mini photo-shoot for a band that I am friends with. They have an album coming out soon so I lent them a hand (and lens).

Here are a few random shots I took during their practice session after the shoot. Hopefully I can post the real band photos once the artwork is finished. have a lovely friday!

picture this...

a couple photographers who inspire me...

Edouard Plongeon
is a French photographer I came across through his band photography . He takes very unique, moody and revealing photos.

I was first introduced to Swedish photographer Sandra Freij through Lula Magazine (see 'Love Letter' Lula 5). Her photography truly is Art. I love the fairytale like quality she brings to her editorial work.

caution: cute shoes may bite

I think it fitting as a follow-up to yesterday's post I relay the brilliance that is my thought process and my life in general. Yesterday morning, pre-flea market, I made the decision to wear my two-tone oxfords to said market because I was sick of my other shoes and wanted to complete my adorable flea-market-going look. After being warned by the BOY that this choice was a poor one and told furthermore that if I still chose to wear them I was not allowed to complain - I shrugged my shoulders thought "OK" then quickly shoved a pair of ballet flats into my gray bag as a back up.

Genius, right? only one problem...I was wearing the black bag and only realized this fact after about 3 hours of marketing. result: Ouch... But I bit my lip and pressed on. When I got home, eyes welling-up, I finally admitted that my poor peds were in disrepair. Cue obligatory "I told you so" and tonight's round two foot therapy session.

I won't be making that mistake again (at least, I don't think)

to market, to market

The L.A. area gets a bad wrap - not that it doesn't deserve some of it, I will be the first to admit it does. But like any other area there are up sides.

I was lucky enough to enjoy one of these niceties this weekend: the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, where I found two lovely vintage dresses at lovely prices for once.

I snapped some photos to share with you all. enjoy...

horror film fashion: rosemary's baby

In honor of October being the month of Halloween (quite possibly the best holiday ever) I've decided to start a series of posts high-lighting horror film fashion. so here goes...
To get the series off on the right foot it was obvious I should begin with my favorite horror film of all time which happens to boast the best fashion in a horror film ever. Rosemary Woodhouse of Rosemary's Baby - arguably the most fashionable pregnant lady ever. Here are a couple ensembles I've complied channeling Mia Farrow's young & hip lady of the 60s - no demonic bun-in-the-oven necessary...

rolled stockings

As previously mentioned , I am a tad obsessed with the 1920's. So, I wanted to share a fabulous site I found a few months ago with you lovely DJRD readers.

Rolled Stockings is one the most comprehensive 1920s/flapper inspired sites I've come across and trust me when I say - I have been looking.

April, the sites founder has complied everything from music (*check out flapper radio) to fashion and beauty tips of the era and pictures galore! check out the amazingness for yourself...

who's that girl - vol.1

I have been coming across photos of this lovely lady for a while now, everywhere from Sartorialist to YouTube. I adore her style & edginess and now I FINALLY know who she is...
Kate Lanphear - style director of US elle which explains a lot (though, true be told I'm not that into Elle.) Apparently, I am not the only one who noticed her; she even has her own thread over at TFS.

I love how she rocks the black/gray and only black/gray look - Its always ultra chic and fashion-forward.

I sometimes fantasize that I could say goodbye to colors and go monochrome...alas, I do like a splash of color a bit too much to commit to such a limited plate. As it is, I have copious amounts of black in my closet already - but like any self-respecting Gemini I simply cannot resign myself to one style concept. I just can't. Clearly, for Kate...not a problem.

speaking of monochrome edginess:who's that girl? - Madonna

Not exactly sure what is going on plot-wise but the styling is A+
