flights of fancy

I'm here at the airport, people watching and wondering what happened to cool airline fashion like they had back in the 1960s?

Remember Zooey D's character in Almost Famous? she had the sweetest uniform ever AND matching Samsonite luggage! It made me want to be a stewardess and I hate flying.

They should really bring that look back. Whoever dresses the "airline attendants" of today has no sense of style.  poor things!

Oops... time to board! bye for now!

holiday film fashion: white christmas

A classic Christmas song, a classic Christmas film. This film should really be required viewing for anyone who celebrates and/or is interested in Christmas.

forties and fifties Hollywood epitomized glamor and the fashion in this film was no exception. I love the idea of long flowing evening gowns of cinched red or black satin but these days that
seems a little impractical. But hey, designers are still making them so someone out there must be able to pull this look off.

gown & gloves: vintage (ebay)
heels: jessica simpson
hair barret & braclet: xxi

earrings: missoni
dress & clutch: net-a-porter
heels: louboutin
bangle: juicy couture

**updated: I originally forgot to post both collages! oops**

countdown insanity

Hello everybody! I'm sure you are all supremely busy getting ready for the Holidays - I am too - so I just wanted to say thanks for taking time to stop by!

I don't think I have mentioned this yet but the day after Christmas I am off to England for a couple of weeks to visit friends in London and "the brit's" family in Cornwall (southwest england).
paper hats my favorite UK holiday tradition

While I am super excited, I am also a little anxiety-ridden for several reasons including but not limited to:
sending the last of my Christmas cards off
getting the remaining presents for my fam & friends
packing to go home for 2 days then packing for the UK for 2 weeks!
arranging pet sitting person for the pups
praying the rain stops long enough for me to drive to and from my parents and not miss my flight on Friday!
I think I'm going to faint.
..

This coupled with my ridiculous and fairly recently founded fear of flying in planes for more than 2 hours at a time is enough to send me screaming for some sort of Hypnosis Therapy
- but I will overcome!

I will definitely try to post as much as I can while in the UK. I am bringing Ye Ol' MacBook but we'll see how the Internet connection goes.

I can only hope it won't be like this when I'm there. burrrski...

In the meantime - how do you pack for winter trips? I'm currently having "packer's block" so suggestions would be greatly appreciated. for example - how many coats, scarves and gloves?

cozy winter day

throwing on an oversized & incredibly cozy sweater, finishing up christmas cards and sipping a few cups of hot cocoa - this sort of day seems to suit everyone in my house just fine...
charlie & lola chose to hang out by the space heater - they'll never finish their cards at this rate.

zooey & oliver

Zooey Deschanel for Oliver Peoples 2009

"Zooey was by far our first choice for the image of our campaign," explains David Schulte, Oliver Peoples CEO. "She truly embodies what we consider to be the core Oliver Peoples customer because she’s chic and mysterious and growing up in LA, also represents our brand’s core DNA."

top songs 2008*

As 2008 nears it's close I thought I'd do at least one or two of "best of 2008" posts. Looking back there actually has been a lot of cool new music in the past 12 months but I thought I'd start with my top 10 songs of 2008...here goes:

(in no order)
ting tings - that's not my name
hot chip - ready for the floor
mgmt - time to pretend
duffy - mercy (you really couldn't escape this, it was everywhere. had to include it)
passion pit - i've got your number
lykke li - dance, dance, dance
santogold - l.e.s. artistes
florence and the machine - kiss with a fist
the idyllists - i think it's gonna rain
the submarines - you me & the bourgeoisie

*two brief disclaimers: I may or may not be way over any and all of these songs (not to say that I didn't listen to them 800 times before this happened) and therefore I feel it only right to include them. Second: I know the minute I post this I'm going to think of 10 songs I liked better and kick myself. that being said I may have to post an additional "oops, i forgot these songs" post. such is life!

So, what are your favorites of 2008???

holiday film fashion: the shop around the corner

Since it has been a while since my last installment of film fashion I thought I'd start again with a more cheery theme - holiday film fashion...

Shop Around the Corner isn't an obvious choice but it's always on tcm this time of year and there is a definite christmas under-current. How can you go wrong with Jimmy Stewart and the adorable Margret Sullavan. I love her costumes in particular. 1940s shopgirl:

dress: unique-vintage
hat & handbag: etsy
vintage coat: ebay
t-straps: anthropologie

earrings heels & braclet: anthropologie
hat, blouse & book: vintage
dress/jumper: topshop

PS: you can watch the whole film on You Tube here.

can't get that trumpet outta my head **

my apologies to those of you who are not fans of the Dresden Dolls or the band's lead singer Amanda Palmer but this song has been in my head for days and I just happened to stumbled upon the music video which is, of course, blissful insanity. And we'd expect nothing less...

To those of you who are intrigued by this tiny taste I encourage you to delve right in. The water is fine!

**non-video post to follow, I swear it!

wha?

Could someone please explain to me what is going on in this, the new Peter, Bjorn & John video? (sidenote: please excuse the abundant use profanity in said video)

I'm so very confused. where are there whistling Swedes? and whose faces are those? Is everything going to be ok?

bye-bye, bettie

In all honesty, I have never been a huge fan of bettie page (proof of this: I didn't even know it was bettie with an "ie" until today!). There are, however, certain things I like about her persona even though their influence may never make itself known in my personal style. In case you are unaware of her life story (which is incredibly interesting) you should read up. The fact that her post-pin-up life was that of a Born-Again Christian is next to befuddling until you learn more about the real girl behind the fishnets, bondage heels & negligee.

In any event, at age 85 she has passed away. To pay homage I thought I'd post a few of my favorite photos of the mysterious (and of course, notorious) bettie page...

dear john

I felt like my little blurb on john lennon yesterday was hardly enough considering how much he has influenced me. so with out further ado here are a couple of recent john lennon covers I've deemed "a worthy attempt to convey genius"

Ok this one is not "recent" per say but points to bono for being able to pull that hat & a mullet off in one go.

sorry for the crap quality!

rambling girl

I was out of town and super busy all weekend so forgive me as I try to catch up on all of my internet-based required reading. what can I say? it's just that time of year! so many things I would like to accomplish, so little time in which to accomplish them.

I did manage to come across a post on a collection of Matryoshka (aka: nesting) dolls that several designers have contributed in honor of the 20th anniversary of Russian Vogue this year. I love all things russian-kitch (even though I am not russian) so this was right up my alley. here are my personal favorites...

blumarine & gucci
YSL & Dolce+Gabbana

aw... I love them.

In other Reckless Daughter news, I came across these extremely adorable little bracelets by katherine sturgis...

My only issue (albeit a rather large one) is the price. yikes! any ideas on where to find similar delicate yet industrial pieces of jewelry that won't wipe out my already dwindling bank account? do svidaniya!

PS: in honor of John Lennon (12/8/80)

hide and go seek

If i was somehow in the dark that this video was from the Victoria Beckham Collection I am convinced I would like it more then I do. grr...why it is so hard to let myself like her?

even though the video is a bit on the odd side of things the dresses look fairly promising, you think?

birds of a feather

I've recently become enamored by Kate Wilson's illustrations - in particular her "little birds" series. The captions are priceless.

chubby little birds? check. desserts? check. fashion? check. I definitely need one of her prints, stat. More here...Kate Wilson
