reckless daughter recap. 1/2009

I've been inspired by the lovely ladies @ NoGoodforMe.com and thus have decided to start a monthly post dedicated to what I've been up to the past four weeks. Hopefully it will help me remember what it is I am actually doing with all my time! I'm calling it the "Reckless Daughter Recap".
so here goes...

tunage:
kcrw [morning becomes eclectic], kinks [something else by the kinks] little joy [self titled debut], andrew bird [nobel beast] & sarah slean's [baroness re-decorates EP]
discoveries...did you know:
Bowling can be traced back to approximately 5200 B.C.? I didn't. did you know that this year is the year of the ox? well, it is. did you know there is a giant island made of trash in the pacific ocean? uh-huh.
favorite fashion ed. of the month: another woman [W Jan 09]
for my viewing pleasure: big love (season 3) secret diary of a call girl (season 2) audrey hepburn movie marathon.
eat, drinking & be broke: cranberry kambucha / vegetarian tapas / champagne / raspberry cheesecake from alcove.
readage?: sophie's world by jostein gaarder, my magazines, my notice for jury duty (why is this allow to happen to me now of all times??)!
typical outfit this month: lots of boots, knits, black blazer with rolled sleeves, black dresses oh, and hair accessories, of course.
sleepage: N/A
highlight of the month:
hopefully my trip to NYC - which starts tomorrow!

knit-wit

there are only a few more weeks of knits in most of our near futures but that doesn't mean we should freeze in the meantime. Enter Inhabit...

I love the earthy color combinations in these shots.  They are having a cashmere sale as we speak - I'm tempted. This is also making me quite excited for my trip to NYC later this week, so many places I want to shop!

man on wire

this documentary is both amazing and totally insane (it's also been nominated for about a million awards since it came out last year). You really have to see it to believe that someone did something so incredible. You also can't help but think of the fate of these monstrous structures as one little french man "walks" between them.

love in the golden years

For some reason I never got around to watching "Love in the Afternoon" even during my Audrey obsession at age 13. So last night (thanks to my newly discovered best friend, instant netflix) I tucked myself in to bed with my laptop and finally gave it a go.

I instantly fell in love with lovely Audrey all over again - no shocker there. But I must say I would have to give the actual plot & her much older costar, Gary Cooper a 3 out of 5. Gary plays a toxic (American) bachelor; Audrey plays Arianne, the charming Parisian cellist who moonlights on occasion as a pathological liar - oh and she also happens to be daughter of a Private Detective. Madness, debauchery and gypsy bands ensue.

I'm still not sure why the powers that be always chose to pair her with men twice her age and to their credit it worked quite well in many films (see: Sabrina, Roman Holiday, Paris When is Sizzles, My Fair Lady AND, of course, Funny Face) just not so much in "Love in the Afternoon". Of course, this is just my opinion and don't let it scare you off. At the end of the day it's still an Audrey movie...and, as we know, she can do no wrong.

I think the trailer is hilarious and tres risque for 1957, non?

future of the past

It's true, the future isn't always what they think it will be. here's a classic example.

girl about town

I completely forgot to post these pictures when I got back from England even though I promised to - I figured now is as good a time as any.

I dragged the boy from one end of London to the next looking for vintage gear. I actally found very little, he found a lot. go figure...

Portobello Market

Brick lane (beyond retro)

It was so funny trying to take a few shots of Beyond Retro's gorgeous displays without getting noticed.  To be blacklisted from this store is the last thing I would ever what to happen to me!

winter/spring wants...

I haven't had time to do any real internet window-shopping for quite a while. To be honest, after the Christmas rush and then my mini-shopping spree in England  I was pretty shopped out (I know, I know, unspeakable). But fear not readers, I'm back to my normal capitalist-self -  bad economy or not.

So without further ado, Here are a few things I am a) considering shelling out some $ for or b)am simply lusting after.

money killed the radio star

It is truly a sad day in the world when one of the best loved independent radio stations in the world is forced out by the likes of the mainstream and the almighty (well not as almighty as it used to be) dollar...

"This is an important message for the Indie 103.1 Radio Audience -Indie 103.1 will cease broadcasting over this frequency effective immediately. Because of changes in the radio industry and the way radio audiences are measured, stations in this market are being forced to play too much Britney, Puffy and alternative music that is neither new nor cutting edge. Due to these challenges, Indie 103.1 was recently faced with only one option --- to play the corporate radio game.

We have decided not to play that game any longer. Rather than changing the sound, spirit, and soul of what has made Indie 103.1 great Indie 103.1 will bid farewell to the terrestrial airwaves and take an alternative course. This could only be done on the Internet, a place where rules do not apply and where new music thrives; be it grunge, punk, or alternative - simply put, only the best music. those of you with a computer at home or at work, log on to www.indie1031.com and listen to the new Indie 103.1 - which is really the old Indie 103.1, not the version of Indie 103.1 we are removing from the broadcast airwaves.

We thank our listeners and advertisers for their support of the greatest radio station ever conceived, and look forward to continuing to deliver the famed Indie 103.1 music and spirit over the Internet to passionate music listeners around the world."

While I didn't like every single show they would broadcast (but loved Jonesy' Jukebox, Big Sonic Heavan & Passport approved), I think it's just so unbelievably lame that this is allowed to happen to such a landmark on the airwaves. They were the first real radio station on the west coast to play: Artic Monkeys, MGMT, Duffy, Tegan & Sara, Bloc Party, CSS, the Kills, Feist, She & Him...the list goes on.

I can only hope that the format stays true to what is was before the move to online only. All this being said, I supposed it's better to have them streaming than to not have them at all. If you are looking for some tunage while at work or while perusing your favorite blogs, give indie a listen.

hollllllliday

I just finalized all the details and am happy to report I will be leaving the land of la-la the end of this month for a little holiday! I'm oh so very excited. It's been a while since my last visit to this place. can you guess where I'm off to?

here's a semi-cryptic hint:

kate & sasha for longchamp ss09

Suffice to say, I love both of these models but these ads are especially cool. I just love the green background. It creates a sort of Emerald city effect.

Still it strikes me as odd that I don't care for the any of the bags (which are, last time I checked anyway, the star product that Longchamp is trying to sell us here) ah, those clever people in advertising...foiled again!

queen of the world

I was luckY enough to see Norwegian rocker gal, Ida Maria play last night and she was completely brilliant (if not a bit drunk). If you get the chance you should definitely catch a show. You can't help but dance around while she croons away. I would describe her as one part the Sugarcubes, one part Regina Spektor and one part the missing girl member of the Ramones.

one of her videos...

high (m)art

new high (m)art's online store opened today and I very much recommend taking a look-see. It's a cool mix of eclectic designers from all over the globe. new high (m)art

I was particularly intrigued by the label T.E.M.O.R.E.S by designer/stylists Carlos Temores who hails from Mexico City. My only complaint is the rather steep price tag and perhaps the limited amount available to purchase stateside. still, a very interesting fashion concept.

golden globes gripes

Perhaps it's just that the Stars have forgotten how to choose suitable GG attire. Last year's ceremony being what it was - sans red carpet & photographers snapping away- could it be that celebs and the stylists who dress them are out of practice? What ever the case may be, this year's carpet left much to be desired. I do not really care about them but this year was so blah I felt especially compelled to point it out.

In a nutshell, the masses basically rehashed the dresses of the past 10 awards seasons, at times supremely boring ("safe" if you will), more often than not ill fitting and sometimes just bad bad bad (see: drew barrymore and poor sheer topped renée zellweger).

To be fair, there were a few that can be deemed acceptable. for example...

Anne Hathaway's dress was alright but honestly a little bit age inappropriate - better for a 40 something, I think.

I liked the idea of Evan Rachel Wood's Elie Saab number, but it may be a little too layered?

I think Kate Winslet's dress by YSL, though a little on the safe side, was one of the better frocks of the night. Plus she won two globes, winners always look better than losers.

And in the most shocking turn of events I actually love Eva Mendes' Dior dress (not so much the necklace). This was shocking bacause I don't usually like her, at all. But I think it works so well with her shape and skin tone.

And there you have it. So, what is your all-time favorite Golden Globes Dress? I'm not even sure what mine is, I just know it isn't any of this year's!

erin online

I was bumming around the web today (nothing new there) and I came upon a site I was sure I had visited before but I'm pretty certain I would remember this one if I had popped by sometime in the past.

erinwasson.com is an ultra-cool affair~ as are most things in the rhelm of this model-turned-renaissance woman ~ from the groovy monochrome layout to the rocking tunes it's pumps out at you. It's fairly comprehensive to. Why not have a gander? erin online

another woman

I tried to bring a few of my magazines along with me on my UK trip but I am only just getting a chance to read them. This will explain why it took me so long to stumble upon this gorgeous ed in the Jan 09 issue of W...

Once again rekindling my love of chloe dresses, valentino coats, ultra-feminine bows and, of course, chanel bags.

reckless daughter UK: happy new year, etc...

Hello & Happy New Year.

I hope you all had a fabulous and safe evening last night. Sorry for the slow-down in my postings but you wouldn't believe the computer I have to work with! it's a snail.

Luckily once we get to London I'll be able to use the boy's MacBook again (god bless wireless internet!)

Meanwhile, here are a few more photos from the journey thus far...
