DJRD's ultimate leading men

I thought it might be fun (spurred on by this new york times piece) to put a bit more testosterone on the pages of this little ol' blog. Why not, right? can't hurt. So I bring you the DJRD's ultimate leading men series...

Exhibit #1: The One, The Only, Mr. Cary Grant
A cinefile friend of mine named Joe once stated that "Cary Grant is the ultimate leading man"; tall, dark, extremely handsome, suave, impeccably dressed and a complete goofball all at once. I have to agree with this, he is "top banana" in my book of leading lads. He was "Mr. Big" before "Mr. Big" even existed. Practically every time I see a photo of him I am compelled to go on a Cary-Grant-movie-bender. Some of my favorites are: to catch a thief, arsenic & old lace, philadelphia story, and of course charade! But there are many many more. And the man was still hot at 61 (and playing opposite leading ladies half his age, I might add)...

One brief disclaimer, do yourself a favor and don't read about his semi-turbulent personal life. Best not to sour the mystique of our ultimate leading man with the trivialities of reality, I think.

So what are your favorite Cary Grant films? AND furthermore, who are your ultimate leading men?

bambi for stella

the new stella mccartney fall 09 ads made me smile.
However, I must admit the cartoon stars may be distracting people from the actual clothes... you think?

street inspiration: chic on two wheels

did everyone have a relaxing weekend?? I tried my best and succeeded fairly well. Got to break in a few "new" vintage pieces - including this adorable playsuit. I have been really trying to figure out how to make this blog a bit more personal style-oriented and will probably start posting more of my own photos in the near future. this is the plan anyway.

For now, I wanted to share some of my recent favorites from a few style blogs (they all happen to involve two wheels!):photo credits: garance dore, facehunter, sartorialist

PS: a big congratulations to the clothes horse - she celebrates 2 years of beautiful blogging today and has been a major inspiration for me & DJRD. well done!

take the fall - armani privé

I have been waiting to do this post for a while now but haven't yet because either I didn't have time to do it right or something else presented itself to be blogged. But today I am feeling up to task.
I fell head over heels for the Armani Privé Fall 09 collection which is strange because Armani is not usually on my list of favorites and tends to be a bit stuffy for my taste. This collection definitely blew away my past judgments. In particular the amazing detailing, accessories and general styling of the whole event. so lovely...

I mean, just look at all the different textures and patterns going on just in this one shot alone. Incredible...Not to mention the beaded hats, which were most likely the reason I even gave to collection a look.

So, ladies & gents, there you have it. I'm officially an Armani Fan!

mm

Here are a handful of the unpublished photos Life Magazine recently released of a 24 year old Marylin Monroe taken in Los Angeles' Griffith Park about a year or two before her career really took off.

I've always been oddly intrigued by Marylin even before I knew about her chaotic life. I think it's something in her eyes that signals she's a bit broken or that she knows something that others don't. These kind of people/things appeal to me, I guess. But with these photos in particular she seems so full of hope and optimism (and youth, I suppose that may be part of it). Aren't they beautiful?

(note to self: must get a monogrammed button up!!)

happy monday...

oh, lillian

I discovered Lillian Bassman for my self after seeing this black and white underwater photo (which reminded me of these photos) and wanted to delve deeper. I'm so glad I did. What an amazing body of work.

A little back-story first:

"Lillian Bassman was born in 1917 in Brooklyn , New York. Her parents emigrated from Russia and soon joined a group of free thinking jewish intellectuals. She moved in with her husband Paul Himmel at age 15 and they were married for over 70 years".

byob (build your own bike)

I am a fan of the customization of pretty much anything and I am also a fan of bicycles. It goes without saying that custom bikes are right up my street and today I discovered that Urban Outfitters is offering limited edition custom bikes on their site.

Pretty cool, aside from two complaints - 1) British racing green is not a color option and 2) no wicker baskets for the front?? what's wrong with you UO people?? I'm afraid these are deal breakers for me but it is still fun to make a bunch of crazy multi-color pretend bikes...so have at it!

If you share my love of les bicyclettes you may like this blog as much as I do: Copenhagen Cycle Chic

love your dress...

True, I don't usually clog up this space with celebrity style business - and there is a reason for this - but I am having a brief love affair with the dress (vintage Ossi Clark?) Miss Emma Watson wore to yesterday's London Premiere of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and wanted to get your thoughts...

I have noticed (as most have) that Emma has been popping up at more fashion related events and has really become a designer darling - this is the first time I've really had anything to say about it. For whatever reason, this dress just clicks with me. Because, despite the terrible weather and the reported "wardrobe malfunction", she looks gorgeous and graceful! I need it!! So what if I don't have a premiere coming up? I'll wear it out dancing, to brunch, heck I'd even wear it just hanging out at my house!

never be sad

I have returned as promised! I hope everyone had a lovely holiday (depending on where you are). I'm excited to get things moving on the old blog again! Being away from the internet reminds me of how useful it can be in helping me discover new things. For example...

American artist Alexis Mackenzie. Her collages make me happy...and not just because they literally remind me to "never be sad"

It takes me a few seconds to figure out what is going on in each one - especially if I don't cheat and look at the titles!
“Never Be Sad” (view here flikr-stream) and if you are in San Francisco you will be luck enough to see it in person...

I'll keep this post short as I'm typing it via a supremely dodgy internet connection in an undisclosed location in the mountains ;) but wanted to say have a lovely weekend!
