flickr favorites: lieke

Well that was a longer than expected break from blogging!  I was traveling and did not have the internet capabilities I had expected. I hope you all had a lovely weekend and/or holiday!

I'm constantly flipping through the pages of photography sites looking for inspiration and escape so I thought I'd start to share a few of my favorites from Flickr and other such places.  There is so much undiscovered talent and beauty out there it's incredible.  First up Lieke, who I believe is Dutch (but don't quote me). I had actually used one of her photos a while back but I got it from a uncited source and never knew where it came from until recently. I'm clearly a sucker for twirling skirts & ringlets - add in some song quotes and I'm yours ;)

She also has some great little videos posted there as well. be sure to check them out!

zooey-trope

It's been a while since my last Zooey Deschanel post and I love these...

via: tfs

I know these were taken by Ellen Von Unwerth but I'm not sure where they were originally published? If anyone knows do tell!!

I also can't wait for she & him vol.2. Fingers crossed that as soon as M.Ward wraps up with Monsters of Folk they'll head back to the studio!

goodnight, glittery moon...

I already liked florence and the machine AND this song (yes, I know it's a of cover a 90s tune) but the sequined costume and glitter encrusted moon just sealed the deal (if you are familiar with my blog this should come as no surprise; I have an affinity for all things shiny).

Have a great week-end, lovelies! and stay tuned for a possible week-end edition of DJRD. xx

anna may wong

Anna May Wong acted along side some of Hollywood's heavy-hitters during the 20s and 30s (think Douglas Fairbanks, Laurence Olivier, Marlene Dietrich), received great acclaim for her onscreen performances, she even has a star on the Walk of Fame and yet she remains fairly unknown today.

It seems that, despite the fantastic reviews and the accolade, Hollywood was reluctant to give her any honest to goodness starring roles. Even occasionally losing out on Asian roles to her white American contemporaries, her career was clearly a struggle. None the less, she was most definitely a pioneer in her field; the first Chinese American film star and the first Asian American to achieve international stardom at the time. Anna May seems to have taken her work very seriously. For example, when asked if she would ever marry she said: "No, I am wedded to my art."

She continued to act here and there until the early 1960s but died at only 56 years old. I found out about Anna a while back and had been meaning to do a post on her for months and months but sort of forgot about her. This seems to be a common theme in her world. For more about her visit the anna may wong society.

Below are my favorite images of Anna May (photo-cartoons)

great, aren't they?

RED my lips

Les Lèvres Rouges are definitely upon us for fall & winter (in case you haven't noticed) and I've been looking for the perfect shade myself...

Michelle Williams is for sure on my top 5 favorite red lips because of these beauties...

I'm into deep/true reds specifically and I've heard good things about reds by MAC & Chanel. What about you lovely people... any suggestions?

photophile :: guy aroch

I've been a huge admirer of photographer, Guy Aroch and I didn't even realize it until rather recently. Apparently, I even have one or two of his photos framed and displayed in my house but I suppose I never took note of who they were shot by... I know, it's terrible of me. In any event, now that I know it seems so obvious that they were captured by the same ethereal eye...

"Guy Aroch moved from Israel to NYC in 1990 to become a professional photographer. In 1993, Guy graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York and began working professionally. Specializing in Beauty, Fashion and Celebrity portraits, his images are considered strong, sharp and beautifully lit. As Aroch puts it, "I always try to create a strong image that is somewhat different than any I have seen of my subject." He shares his time between NYC and Europe"

art of the trench

I know I have expressed my love of le trench coat on this blog at least once or twice before, however, two trench-related items have come up over the past few days so I am compelled to revisit this iconic piece of clothing...

First off... I, along with several other bloggers, was asked by Kristin of IdiosyncraticStyle what my ‘Holy Fashion Grail’ items would be.  I decided to go ultra-classic with my answers; instead of saying oh, i don't know a vintage Chanel/Givenchy gown or similar, I went with a black quilted Chanel bag and of course, a classic Burberry Trench Coat.  These are things I could see myself wearing forever because they will simply never go out of style. That's right, sometimes even I can be (stylishly) practical! check out idiosyncraticstyle
The second trench-related item is the launch of Burberry's "Art of the Trench" website (with images by the lovely Scott, The Sartorialist among others).  It includes street-style images of people around the globe wearing Burberry trench coats, a history of the trench over the past 100 years, and you can even submit your own photos which is pretty cool. So prepare to clock some Burberry browsing time...
