dress down vs. dress up

Lately, a few of my favorite bloggers have posted (and challenged others to post) photos of themselves in casual clothing, the kind that one wouldn't normally post on one's blogs; Something you'd wear at home on a lazy Sunday, for example.   I thought this was an interesting idea but then I realized that I tend to look "overdressed" even when I dress down and some people might get the impression that alot of time goes into that look. But here's a little secret... it doesn't.  I generally throw on things that are comfortable without being sloppy AND since I'm perpetually running five minutes late, I do want to emphasize these outfits are seriously thrown on. Anyhow, I thought I'd change it up a little and add another dimension to the post by including a second set of photos of me dressed up.   This is mainly because I've had several requests to post more photos of my New Years Eve dress (AKA the Mummy) and have let a month go by without making good on my promise! so sorry.

This is what I wore when I ran out this morning to grab a coffee at the laurel canyon store. *prep-time: 2 minutes:

jeans: siwy (gilt), sweater: UO (mens xs - yay!), duckboots: vintage llbean

quick change...
(sidenote: I  really need to repaint my toes! :) )

And for a dressy night out...

Not to give excuses, but I am a bit under the weather (cough, cough) so I, honestly, might have styled the second outfit a bit more if I were actually going out and not just playing dress up for you wonderful people! :) xx

In other color related news, I watched the film BLEU last night (for the millionth time) and I forgot how much I love it...

marrakesh express

What first drew me to this particular cover of Vogue Paris was probably the fact that Miss Daria appeared to be wearing  some sort of crystal chandelier as a dress (It's the "shiny shiny" factor I've mentioned in past posts.)  Then the warm colors and cool styling took over and I was enticed to see more...

Aside from the pseudo-creepy Moroccan man just lurking about and the workman boots, there is something about this Ed that I really love.

I should mention that this is a huge editorial and, while Daria is the focus, several other models are featured (lara stone, freja, etc) . Find more here & here - I should also point  out that, to me, Daria Werbowy can be a bit boring sometimes but this shoot really suits her.

cut it out: viktor & rolf

The latest issue of Dazed & Confused Magazine features an incredible spread (and cover) with these surealist tulle gowns from viktor & rolf which are seriously works of (semi)wearable art.  I'm not sure how I neglected this collection back in October but I can only assume the culprit was Fashion Week-overload. In any event, I'm glad that I have now been  introduced to these beauties via such a cool editorial. Those little Dutch boys never fail to give us the whimsical, do they?

so let it rain

I thought I'd start off the week with a passed-due outfit post. I took these on Saturday, luckily, the weather people were wrong in predicating it would be full of rain and I actually had some sun to work with. In fact, it didn't officially start to rain until Sunday afternoon which I honestly found mildly amusing since it came just in time to soak the Redcarpet of the Golden Globes. Yes, it's true, even Hollywood can't do a thing about the weather!

Enough of that and back to the outfit post at handI know what you might be thinking, another red dress!?! But this is my latest vintage etsy find and I must say, I really lucked out with this one. Aside from it needing (eventually) to be taken in ever so slightly, it's very close to the imaginary dress I had been looking for. Do you ever make up articles of clothing or accessories in your head and wish that you had the power (or master sewing skills) to make them yourself? Well, I do this quite often and occasionally I find what I've been looking for with out use of a genie or a magic lamp! Red, blue, tiny flower embroidery and ribbons - how could I resist! (*sidenote* sorry about light in the first shot - this just proves there is such thing as an over-abundance of California sunshine)

Happy MLK day to those of you in the US or to anyone who can appreciate this great human being, his dream and all he accomplished.  Here's (a extremely sweaty) Bono doing a little MLK tribute. Have a great Monday!
