bear upon the beach

I've been in a vintage beach-photos mood his week, for what ever reason, and I happened upon this adorable German Vogue editorial circa 2006(?). I'm not exactly sure why there's a polar bear involved but I can tell you this much, I like it...

the right to shoes and peace of mind

Did you ever have one of those moments when, all of a sudden, you become so irritated you are practically inconsolable because... your hair isn't laying the way you want it to OR your eyebrows are unevenly plucked (and seriously how could you have missed that earlier!) OR because your clothes are fitting really weirdly at that exact moment and you have no idea why (perhaps a phantom seamstress snuck in during the night?)  OR your nails are grossly chipped but there's no time to re-paint OR you can't figure out which of your 8,598 pairs of SHOES to wear (ok, I have nowhere near that number, it was for effect)? The point is, you get so worked up that you have turned this little insignificant (in the grand scheme of things) detail into a pseudo-existential crisis! and on top of that, you should have been out the door at least 5 minutes ago! We've all been there, right?

Well, I had one of these moments the other night as I was getting ready to go out and I got so flustered that I finally just started laughing at my silliness and quickly decided that I needed to capture some of the madness with my macbook's camera - as blog therapy.  *disclaimer* this is the first time I've used iMovie to edit anything, I only had about an hour to do it, AND the lighting in my house at night is notoriously dim - we like it that way. the videos... do not.

So, take a deep breath, people...it's gonna be OK.

PS: which shoes would you choose?

***UPDATE: I chose the black & white oxfords!

photophile :: lena erysheva

When I saw these the unbelievably colorful shots by Lena Erysheva I knew I'd have to post a few here. Sadly, I don't know much else about her aside from her being Russian - but the photos should really speak for themselves...

They actually remind me a little of the new Alice in Wonderland film (tim burton) coming out next month which I am so looking forward to! I'm pretty much a geek for anything Alice.

flea market finds

I mentioned last week that I went to the Rose Bowl Flea Market (yet again) last Sunday but this time I made a few great finds which I will post momentarily. But first, a little run down on this market...

For those of you who haven't been, this is a monthly flea/vintage market in Pasadena and it takes place in the parking lot of the Rose Bowl Stadium.  In case you weren't tipped off by the fact that it takes up a major chunk of a parking lot meant to hold just under 100,000 people's cars, I can tell you it tends to be a little overwhelming unless you have pretty specific list of items you are looking for (e.g. furniture or dresses or jewelry, etc). The first visit can be especially rough merely because it is so huge - so plan ahead! You could easily go in and miss everything if you're not in that  "flea market mindset" (for those of you who buy and sell vintage a lot already I know I'm preaching to the choir - it's all about the shopper's state of mind, right?). More info like dates, cost of admission and location can be found here ROSE BOWL FLEA MARKET.  It is definitely worth checking out if you are in the area!

Now, back to the finds from my last visit. I should add that I did not have a specific list and just tagged along with"the Brit" (who was in the market for some vintage glasses) so I think I really just lucked out this time around.  I'm generally always looking for dresses and jewelry so that's where I started and I found two vintage coats (for next to nothing), this dress...
and this vintage 70s bracelet...
but by far the most exciting thing was this polaroid camera from the late 60s...

The camera also turned out to be a total steal but I tried not to get my hopes up at first because the seller wasn't even sure that it worked.  Still, we brought it home and cleaned it up a bit, bought a new battery online and I was even able to track down some film this past week.  but IT STILL WORKS! The first few were trial and error but by about the third picture we had it figured out and now I'm slightly addicted...

perfect curls

Trust me when I say that perfect curly hair does not come easy... that is unless you're Shalom Harlow, apparently (or Lady Smaggle for that matter).  I really need to start making use of my natural curls - or a the very least start learn how to get them looking closer to this...

fashion week(ness)

Ah, Fashion Week NYC...no matter how I try to ignore you, in the back of my mind I know you are there.  Suddenly, I find myself lurking on the pages of Style.com for hours on end to see what you have to offer this time around. It's true, I can't help but get excited about at least a few shows every season and, of course, then I want to share my favorites here on this blog. Since this is a fashion-focused blog I think it's only fair that I get to post my FW favorites! There are some people out there who believe that to "cover" fashion week you have to be there.  I believe that, with all the runway and detail shots available, the internet is a much easier way to get a really good look at the pieces in a collection because there is not a time limit. Just my thoughts. Obviously, I wouldn't turn down a chance to attend a Rodarte show (for example) but I would not be surprised if I used the internet to get a better look afterward.

Anyhow, that being said, here are a few of my favorites from NYCFW F2010...

Rebecca Taylor is one of those designers who's collections I expect to like but this one was especially lovely.  She has a way with prints and even managed to make leopard print seem fresh.  I also love the length of her skirts and the subtle yet eye-catching colors scheme.
Rodarte is a favorite of mine. I love the futuristic yet romantic aesthetic their line consistently coveys.  I found this collection was much less abrasive than the previous one though. It was easier for me to connect. oh, and it would be perfectly ok if someone bought me one of the white floor length dresses. I promise I'd figure out how to wear it to work :) update* see video of the entire show HERE

The first thing about Zac Posen's collection that I noticed was the bright red velvet pieces, next it was the flirty skirts and finally the statement coats.  It's the perfect mash up of  the 40s and 60s.  But let me state for the record that I would only wear that fur if it was fake. so please, no angry comments!! I heart animals.

Julian Louie... I don't know much about this designer at all but this entire collection is right up my street. I could live in these! so very cute with an edge.

I also loved:
I'm sure there will be more! I do promise to mix it up a little and not overload you with runway collages!

    too hot to trot

I spent the majority of my weekend taking photos of other people (bands, friends, etc...) so today I decided it was time to snap a few shots of myself for a laugh.  When I stepped outside I soon realized the sunshine was out in full force and it was a bit hot for my all black ensemble! but I stuck it out and managed to get a few usable photos. (sorry to all of you out there freezing but I want real February weather! I'm feeling a bit left out, as is my winter wardrobe!)
I got this studded shoulder playsuit for christmas and wasn't 100% sure about it BUT it somehow managed to find it's way (tags and all) into our washing machine before I had even worn it! Thus becoming a permanent part of my wardrobe, at least for now.   The bag is vintage and was a gift from "the Brit"a few months back.  He thinks I should wear it more so it's making its blog debut.  ta-dah...
Did you notice my daffodils!?! I think I mentioned them a few weeks back but I can't believe how well they appear to be doing - they're blooming! I'm pseudo-gardener, who knew*!
I hope you all had a great Valentine's day. I spent the day with "the Brit", went to the Rose Bowl flea market and made a few great finds (which I shall post about soon), made a lovely dinner at home and watched Depeche Mode 101.  low key and lovely! What did you kids get up to?

*it could just be all of the rain in recent weeks and unseasonable warm weather. I like to humor my ego :)

    NON plus ONE

I debated about whether or not to post yet another opening ceremony related post but this was just too good to not post...it's totally Goddard style and we know how I love those films! It features Kirsten Dunst & Jason Schwartzman donning Opening Ceremony's S/S2010 collection. enjoy...

non plus one final directed by Gia Coppola and Tracy Antonopoulos

    Happy Friday kids! xx

    McQueen

I just wanted to do a quick post about Alexander McQueen's death because it's such a shock and a huge loss for the fashion community. It's a reminder to appreciate everyday you are given on this little "marbled bowling ball" and live life the way you want to live it (wearing whatever pleases you).  take care out there...xx
