I was a dreamer

And so, we come to the closing of yet another week, can you believe it?!  It's already Halloween again! I am happy to report I did manage to pull together (most) of my costume, finally, which should be a fun one.
Speaking of things that are autumnal, I’ve recently been digging around the dark recesses of my closet  looking for fall and winter items that I may have hidden from myself since last year.  Nevermind that it’s been in the high 70s & 80s all week! I want to wear wool-blends and scarves already. Afterall, it is almost November, is it not?  It was during one of these scavenger hunts that I pulled out this vintage Ralph Lauren jumpsuit and thought “perfect” this is just what I meant about a fall wardrobe.  In all truth, it was a bit warm for this outfit but rolling up the sleeves and opening up some buttons helped enough.

While I'm not sure who Mr. P. Smith was, I do know he wrote his name in the concrete path outside our house.
outfit details:
shoes & RL jumpsuit - vintage
belt - h&m
necklace - a gift

Have a wonderful Halloween everyone! I'll try and post a photo or two of my "Top Secret" costume later.

up on the roof

One of my favorite things about where I live is that it really doesn't feel like LA at all. I hope that isn't a terrible thing to say, but it's very true! For instance, I know most of my neighbors names and have their phone numbers (that never happened to me anywhere else in this city)... we have a lovely little yard and our house is surrounded by greenery on all sides...Lily, the lovely blond-haired Iranian woman who runs the coffee stand knows me by name and asks if everything is ok if she hasn't seen me around for a while...should anything big happen in the neighborhood I'm most likely going to find out about it within a day... and some nights I fall asleep to the sound of coyotes chirping in the hills above (yes, they chirp. scary to me at first but it's such a novelty now).

All of this and I am basically 4 blocks from the Sunset Strip - pretty incredible, non? So I suppose I've learned to be more opened to the great things Los Angeles has to offer thanks to the magic of the Canyon. It makes me want to explore the city further. Or, in this case, to explore my own surroundings further. Like yesterday, when "the Brit" and I decided to brave a makeshift ladder and hop onto the roof to see what the view up there was all about...
I'm a bit squinty - it was really bright up there! I also left my cardigan down below.

I look really weird here but I managed to capture the ever elusive "Brit" so I had to post it :)

Spellbound

I have a confession to make, I’ve been really awful at reading my W magazines for the past 6 months or so (I've been subscribed for years and it used to be one of my favorites back when I first started reading fashion mags).  It just got a little uninteresting a few months in a row and then I just stopped looking at it.  Luckily, I did randomly take a peek this month (despite the ridiculous cover and spread with Kim Kardashian – I’m warning you, it’s not a pretty site) and managed to come across this little gem of an editorial...

It's true that in general I do tend to love anything with a Hitchcock-vibe but this is also so playful and full of color. I'm sure I'll be wearing bright colors all weekend now thanks to these gorgeous shots.   Hope you enjoy your weekend too where ever you are!

PS: thanks to everyone who commented on the Pink Ribbon post! I'm making my donation this weekend. xxdjrd

think pink & comment for a cause! (comments closed!)

As you probably know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and so many people have shown their support in amazing ways in recent weeks.  I was particularly inspired by Blaubushka's 'blogging for boobs' post. I'm not sure this post qualifies as “amazing” but I had been brainstorming about what I could do and I came up with the following...

It's pretty simple and it works like this, for each comment left here by one of you lovely people I am going to donate $2 to pinkribbon.org! In your comments you can mention someone you know who has had breast cancer, share your thoughts about the disease, pledge your own donation or just say hello! One comment per person, I should add. Anonymous commenters please leave your name or link. Also please retweet, blog, or tumbl a link to this post! I’m hoping this little experiment works... if it does I may have to cap it off at a certain number cause I'm no Daddy Warbucks, then again,  if I only get 4 comments I'll add a bit extra to the donation. We shall see!

Thanks everyone!

reckless daughter wants: the fall 2010 edition

I know it's been ages since I've done a wants collage so I thought I'd do two for you on this cozy Sunday. It seems like there is always something on my list but I don't mind - that's part of the fun, right?! It would be way too boring if I got everything I wanted!  Plus many of my wants evolve season to season too - as I am sure yours do. Here are some things on my list for fall...

rainy days, red kimonos

I've feel like I’ve been on a perpetual search for a vintage kimono since the dawn of time but I am so picky that I've managed to pass up (and sometimes later regret) many a contender.  When I spotted the little red and white print in a miscellaneous rack at a local vintage store I was immediately drawn to it - and once I realized it was a Kimono I was smitten!

I wore it for the first time as a dress of sorts to "the Brits" gig earlier this week and I was pretty happy with how it turned out. Of course, it was nighttime and a little chilly out so I decided to take some photos inside for a change...

outfit details
kimono & bracelet: vintage
shoes: ecote

lipstick: mac RED

musical notes: It's gloomy here today so I made a rainy day playlist - listen to it here:

Have an absolutely wonderful weekend everybody! x djrd

let's go to the hop

Hello, my dear(s)!  How is the week kicking off?  Mine has been pretty good thus far and tonight should be especially fun since it is the debut of "the Brit's" new 50s rock n' roll side project. The tunes are inspired by early Elvis and others from that first era of rock n' roll which I love.  I am so excited for him, although, figuring out what to wear is causing a small amount of drama...which probably I secretly like. Figuring out what to wear can be a bit like a puzzle that comes together after a few pieces are put in the right place.  I'm not there yet though so I'll report back when an outfit actually starts to come together! Did I mention I have 45 minutes for it to come together between work and dinner? Ah, my life... seems I never have much time to plan things out!

Meanwhile, I wore this little getup on Sunday and felt slightly dresses-up considering I wasn't doing anything in particular. Sidenote: Sorry, I'm wearing black again! but the vintage bag and the pink bows on my tights helped to mix it up a little, non?!
I can't believe this bag hasn't made it on to my blog yet! I got it in Joshua Tree when I was there for my birthday months ago.  It was a great summer bag and, I wager, it will be a fine autumn bag since in LA that apparently means an extended but slightly cooler summer. (I long to wear knits, people!)

outfit details:

dress: "vintage" ie: from the 80s
tights: primark
bag: joshua tree antique mall
flats: deena & ozzy

write about love

I should have posted these sooner but I got distracted by other posts and things. Anyway, this is what I wore when I attended the belle & sebastian show with my dear friend, miss beth jean earlier in the week.  It's strange, I've been wearing a lot more black recently and not on purpose. Maybe it's because it is October and Halloween is looming and all. Which reminds me, have you figured out what you are going to be yet?  I have it narrowed down but it all depends on what I can find in thrift stores and vintage shops between now and then. And, hey, I can always go as this again!

outfit details:
gold bow dress - worn as top
sparkly oxfords: denna & ozzy
tapshorts: sparkle & fade
belt: kate moss for topshop (first season)

In other news, I finally got around to buying a point n' shoot camera so I can throw it in my bag when I go to places my trusty Canon SLR  is not practical. It's also a Canon; I'll report back once I've formed an opinion but it seems great so far!

the talented miss mulligan

While I didn't necessarily fall head-over-heels for the October cover of US Vogue w/ Carey Mulligan at first (in fact, it sat on my bedside table for weeks until I finally cracked it open yesterday), I really do love many of Peter Lindbergh's shots for this editorial - not to mention the great gowns, as styled by Miss Grace Coddington. So I thought I'd share them with you in case you missed it...
 (in particular, this one ^)

Actually, I know relatively little about the lovely actress and have (gasp!) yet to see An Education from start to finish (even though we [my work] had two clients on the film & even though I had the screener on my desk weeks before it was even in theaters...don't ask how this happened, there just aren't enough hours in a day).  I do want to see Never Let Me Go while it's still in theaters! So I'll report back once I have an educated opinion!

Also, here is a little video from the Vogue shoot - behind the scenes.
