black (and brown) friday.

Hello from fabulous Las Vegas! well I'm actually on my way back from my parents house where I was staying for the long Thanksgiving weekend so I figured I'd take advantage of the change in scenery.  Also, I have to make a disclaimer that my visits to Las Vegas (especially this one) are a bit different from other people's visit to "Vegas".  There won't be any neon or slots in this quick post, I'm afraid.   Instead, just so plain background outfit shots of what I wore for the Black Friday shopping madness.  My parents are actually in the middle of a remodel so it was hard to find a well-lit space that wasn't covered in dust or displaced kitchenware...

colds and sequins

Hello, my dears.  Well, it's official... I caught my first cold of the season... and without even trying. And it's just in time for Thanksgiving break. Imagine my excitement.  Yesterday was basically spent in bed, hence no post, but don't feel too bad for me, I may be on the mend already.

Meanwhile, I thought I'd show you the little vintage beauty I picked up over the weekend. I think it's late 50s/early 60s and the bead work is just gorgeous...
I haven't officially worn it and it needs a good dry cleaning but I had to try it on for a few minutes just to see how it looked.

I may take it up a little length wise because it is a little bit longer than I want it to be but for the price tag I have to admit, I am quite happy!

see you soon!

six things about me...

that you may not know from reading my blog...

1.  I am the shortest in my immediate family, at 5'5" and a half - as Betty Draper says "my people are Nordic" (aka tall viking types).
2. My hair is naturally pretty curly - I blow it dry and curl it with curlers, rags or a curling iron depending on my mood. I wish I could sort out my natural curls but they never look quite right when I let them dry au naturel. (I am open to tips though!)
3. I am the oldest of 4 children. I was 12 and a half when my youngest brother was born, thus, was put in charge a lot. So much so that I was lovingly referred to by friends as an "underage soccer mom".
4. I've seen the film Sliding Doors more times than I should admit. It's my go to chickflick along with When Harry Met Sally and Reality Bites (is that a chick flick? not really, I guess). Point being, I have my cinematic vices.
5. It took me quite a while to warm to LA but now that I've explored it a bit and found my favorite spots I find it much more than the cliches that the rest of the world throws at it. Not that I wouldn't jump at the opportunity to live in New York!
6. I drive a mini - it's name? Minnie the Mini, of course!

Following my twitter may lead to learning more random facts about me - if you're interested, I'd love to have you! @recklessdaughtr

It's raining here in LA and so I'm off to sleep with the sound of rain hitting the roof of our little cottage in the Hollywood Hills. Who doesn't love that sound...

Have a great weekend, everyone!

star witness

On Friday night "the Brit" and company did a little acoustic gig at the uber cute Silver Lake shop Enid & Edgar Vintage.  I immediately spotted this lacy shawl at the end of a rack and knew I needed to have it.  I dubbed it my “Mexican Granny shawl” and proceeded to wear it around most of the weekend - including Saturday, when I wore it with this Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face/beatnik outfit consisting of a black top, black jeans & black (sparklie) brogues. Luckily, the shawl brought some white into the equation and made me feel a little less like an old woman in mourning.

all my little words

I have to point out, I’m really excited that I’ve finally been able to start wearing my coats and scarves (at night at least) during the past week. Fingers crossed we are no longer dealing with sweltering temperatures here in LA LA Land and autumn is officially here. I do hate that I go on about the weather so much these days but I was thinking about it and, as style bloggers, isn’t the weather a huge part of it all? Think about it... it changes what we wear, when we wear it, how we wear it, etc. I guess I shouldn’t be so hard on myself. Anyway, bottom line, I’m loving the change in weather and the wardrobe changes it has brought along with it.

Now, as promised, here is one of the dresses I picked at the Loved One’s sale last week – if it looks familiar, it’s the one I was holding in the dressing room shot last post. However, I wanted to show it off here so I didn’t cover it up with the cool weather items I was waxing on about in the above rant. But I feel many remixes coming on with this amazing frock so you’re likely to see it again soon. PS: Yes, it’s another red dress, don't judge... “I have an addiction, sir”.

Now I'm off to get my hair done (finally)! Enjoy your day!

les loved one

Last Friday Eve I was lucky enough to stop by The Loved One's showroom for a little vintage sale they were having. Complete with fancy holiday punch and goodies, dreamy music and, of course, the lovely miss Hannah and her partner in vintage hunting & lingerie designing, Elvia, in the flesh -- it was honestly hard to leave the place!

I knew the sale would have lots to offer because they both seem to have impeccable taste but I have to admit, it surpassed my (& my gorgeous shopping buddy, Beth Jean’s) expectations. It was hard to force myself to pick what to buy and what to leave behind but I did pretty well none the less and you'll be seeing those treasures on this blog in the near future.

But first...while usually I’m the worse at taking pictures during events, I actually managed to snap a few shots of the happening so I thought I'd share them with you!

obligatory blogger self portrait ;) please note that those polka dots did, in fact, come home with me.

I can't wait for the Loved One to launch their lingerie line! They had a few pieces on display and they are oh so pretty!

what's your sign?

Though I wouldn't live my life according to my Star-sign's predictions, I do love reading my horoscope on occasion or reading anything pertaining to being (as I am) a "Gemini".  I also love learning what signs other people (friends & acquaintances) are since, a lot of times, I see some similarities between people of the same zodiac - Some would call me silly for saying so (like my dear father, for example ;)

Anyhow, when I spotted something about Siri being in a UK editorial based on the Zodiac I had to take a look. I have to admit I am little confused about a couple of these (why is pieces (the fish) in a garbage can?) but I loved the idea none the less...

my day in video clips...

Oops, I guess maybe I wasn’t "back tomorrow" as promised but I am back now! My Tuesday completely got away from me and I had to finish up a few other time-sensitive projects before I got around to this post. Anyhow, I had been contemplating this idea of doing a “my day in video clips” post for a while now.  It proved a bit more challenging than I first suspected, mainly because I wasn’t sure how easily the clips would all fit together, but they seem to work just fine.  And so, this is what my Saturday looked like in clips (also know as, if you ask “the Brit” for help shooting clips for your blog you have basically given him license to harass you with your own camera for the whole of the day)...

Highlights...
how many animals can you spot? (answer: too many)
English pancakes!
Me mumbling “that’s enough” to “the Brit” during the first driving scene.

rosemary woodhouse...

If you've been reading this blog for a while you may very well know of my small obsession with the film Rosemary's Baby (especially the fashion!) and it will come as no suprise that I was Rosemary Woodhouse for Halloween this year - though I opted for the final scene outfit which is basically a nightgown and slippers. I was pretty comfortable, I must say! My wig (trimmed by me and the Brit) was not the best ever but I left this costume til the last minute so I had to make do!
