spring-minded

I can't seem to get spring out of my head this week and it has provoked me into wearing more florals than usual and even faux flora and fauna in my hair.  Que my small but respectable collection 50s and 60s  hats which, I realize, does not get it's fair share of screen time here.  In fact, I am fairly positive that I have never posted this particular hat which I've had for ages.
The muted pinks are definitely some of my favorite-ever hues.  The only issue is finding a time and place to wear my hats without looking a tad, er, overdressed (or having "the Brit" give me weird looks!).  But some days you just have to ignore all of that and go for it...which is basically what happened here!
The shorts were a New York purchase - they are from Pixie Market (note: a bit wrinkled after a few hours of wear but still lovely, I think).

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.  Sunday is April already! can you stand it?!

union chapel gig

Someone posted a video from the Lucette London show (Secret Sisters UK tour) featuring me and "the Brit".  I thought I'd post it since I never did post any of our actual performances. Enjoy!

more "life according to my iphone"

meg of don juan's reckless daughter
Back from NYC and thoroughly exhausted after a busy weekend here in LA. While I finish recuperating I thought it would be a good time to take a quick look a the past month or so as seen through my iPhone...

Back very soon.  Meanwhile, how many of you watched the premiere of MadMen yesterday and what did you think?! We had a little MadMen cocktail hour at my house which was quite amusing.  It's funny watching it with a group of people after having seen most of the series solo and on my computer.   Personally, I thought is was a pretty good start but I'm also ready for Betty to make an appearance.

PS: I finally made the transition from my old blogspot address to www.donjuansrecklessdaughter.com! This has been a long time coming (I've had the domain for over 3 years!) It should redirect you automatically in your readers, address bar, etc but please do let me know if you have any issues! xdjrd

you won't see me

you won't see me
I am actually in NyC (which you may have already heard if you read Niotillfem or my twitter) having a marvelous time BUT before I left I took these in the garden. I should have posted them sooner but I haven't been around my computer much!
long skirt
Recently, I've been branching out into the realm of longer skirts - this is one of two now in my closet. For some reason both are hues of green but this one has a small print. I've also been terrible at posting any of my bags lately so I figured I'd share this one I bought at Topshop last Summer! I tend to change bags only when I go out a night - other wise I stick to my trusty Marc by Marc Jacobs messenger.

come see the Sea

I came across this collection via the lovely Sarah Sophie Flicker's twitter.  It is accompanied by a wonderful short film she and her directing partner in crime, Maximillia Lucas, created for NY-based clothing label SEA -- the directing duo are also know as "the Belles of the Diamond Field" whose work I have posted about many times beforeThe film features Sarah Sophie and Tennessee Thomas (who is also cute as pie). Anyway...have a look for yourselves!
I not only love this short but I'm really in love with the clothing and am so glad to have been turned on to SEA. Here are a few of my favorites from this collection:

dissecting the atlas for places we've been

Hello cats & kittens! I thought I would finally do another wardrobe post for you.  This week has been really warm during the days, so much so, that when I took these photos (I was in hurry incidentally so hopefully it doesn't show!) I had to keep taking my cardigan on and off to keep cool!  It's fine when you're in air–conditioned buildings/cars but in direct sunlight it's a bit balmy.  I bought this jumper (in the American sense of the word) at Pop Vintage in Manchester while on tour with Lucette -- hard to believe that all happened over a month ago.  Admittedly, its a tad roomie but I've been wearing it like mad. Mostly, because I fear it may soon be too hot for tweed!

no wave

As you've probably noticed, I don't straighten my hair often (ie: ever) but a few years ago, when my hair was shorter, I went through several different flat irons ranging from a pricey CHI (which I killed with high-voltage on a trip abroad...oops) all the way down to a $14 drugstore brand one.  My hair has a lot of natural curl to it (and a bit of frizz too...hurrah!) and it used to plague me. I have since learned to embrace it - these days I don't even own a flat iron! or at least, I didn't until I was contacted by Misikko.com about trying out one of their products for review on DJRD.  I saw that they boasted some of the "best flat irons" on the market so I thought I'd put them to the test.

They kindly sent me the Hana 1.5 Flat Iron, honestly, a bit wider than I'm used to but it definitely does the job well and it has a temperature control which is a necessity in my opinion.  Anyhow, all of this resulted in this silly little tutorial I made to demonstrate my...er.... "technique" (or perhaps lack there of?)

Some things I didn't mention in the video...if your hair is naturally curly/wavy blow-dry it first, that way you'll get some of the curl out to begin with.  Secondly, start on a lower heat setting then if you aren't getting the results you want adjust temp in small increments.  Please do NOT straighten your hair everyday or overtime YOU WILL FRY IT - I promise!

Basically, while Hana products are definitely on the pricey side they are also very solid products so I suppose you get what you pay for.  Hope you enjoyed me being ever so slightly awkward - videos are not my strong suit ;)

see you soon! xdjrd
