charmed, I'm sure

I've been on the lookout for new jewelry because I haven't purchased any in what seems like ages.  Part of that is due to the fact that I have been given several items from family and friends in the past few years that I wear all the time (most of them are necklaces or rings).  Jewelry someone gives to you doesn't have to be fancy, just the thought behind it can make a piece more special than it would be had you bought it for yourself.  Vintage jewelry is always great because it comes with it's own secret history but there also are many newer pieces that I also wouldn't mind getting my paws on.

Lately, I've been noticing adorable little charm bracelets popping up various places: tv, blogs, photo streams, etc. This might all be a coincidence but the timing was a little odd. The first time they came up was during an episode of MAD MEN a few weeks ago. In the episode the Drapers go to Rome and after the trip Don gives Betty an italian charm for her bracelet to remember her trip by. (I know, I know so I'm behind!)Though in that specific instance, the gift does not go over too well - I think there is something terribly romantic and old fashion about the idea of a charm bracelet.
I've also come across a few bloggers wearing them...
 1. what I wore  2. styloretic  3. la ville inconnue

Some of them mention that their bracelet was there mothers or grandmothers before them. lovely little heirlooms. Since my own lovely mother isn't much for cutesy jewelry - she's more into modern pieces - Yurman, etc - I thought maybe I'd start my own heirloom? However, all of the new bracelets I had been finding were a bit bulky or too trendy for my tastes (juicy makes some, for instance, that are just not my thing).  A few weeks ago, however,  I was sent an online catalog from Stephen Einhorn and while rummaging around I noticed that they carried a bunch of charm bracelets of various shapes and styles.  I love this sweet little bracelet with the bee charm, I think that is the one I would start of with...
I think that bees are such incredible little creatures plus they remind me of the warmer months which reminds me of my birthday in June.  I also just got a vintage novelty print dress that happens to be "bee print" which I am dying to post.  Looks like I may be on the verge of a "bee obsession". Meanwhile, still no new jewelry!

Of course, you can also find a ton of charms and/or bracelets on etsy. For example, despite my love for simpler jewelry, how fun is this one?!
So... what are your thoughts on the charm bracelet? Do you think they are old fashion or fashion forward?  Incidentally, my next mission is to find a couple of silver rings. I lost my favorite one on a trip earlier this year, much to my dismay. If you have any ideas on where find a cool replacement - that's not too pricey - please let me know! xdjrd

I made matching charm bracelets for me and my best friend when we went our separate ways for university. I don't really wear mine, though - not much of a bracelet person, they get in the way too much for me.

I do think the bee one is adorable, though!

I have a butterfly charm bracelet that I haven't taken off in over a year, and my mum wears bangles that she hasn't taken off in almost twenty years. I love the theatricality of jewellery but it's also really nice to have something that's just a part of your everyday. Also, awesome song x

I love charm bracelets that are a little bit whimsical and childish; there's something in them that speaks to me (for example, that big flowery one in your picture has me grinning.) Or ones that are really personalized, but not in a filled-my-Pandora-bracelet-in-one-day kind of way.

i know james avery is not really a place for trendy jewelry pieces. but that's maybe the reason to why i want one of there charm bracelets... if only my husband would pick up on the hints.

they come out with new charms quite often and they fix all there pieces for life if the clasp breaks or something.

and you have many options for the first charm and different bracelet to pick from.
