she's governed by simple pleasures

This time of year is always an interesting one for me because, while I do like springtime, I also feel like I miss out a little on the winter experience.  Here in Los Angeles the transition from a pretty short-lived, mild winter to longer, sunnier spring days seems to happen almost over night.  I know there are those of you further north and east who would like it if I stopped my complaining at this point, but it’s true! I think I can hear my winter coats are shouting from the back of my closet “That’s it?!That’s all we get?”.

On the other hand, it was pretty nice to put on a straw hat and a dress (one you've seen before) laze about in the sun.  I probably could have done without the cardigan but I had it in my bag just in case the remnants of a winter breeze snuck up on me...

yay...new shoes...

pick the rare flower

I thought it might be time to take a break from my spring favorites for a minute and do an outfit post again.  I also think it's safe to say that spring has officially crept up on Los Angeles; though it is still chilly at night and in the early morning hours when the sun is in hidding.  The flowers in our garden have begun to bloom and "the Brit's" hay-fever is certain to take hold of him any day now.  I will say, that is one of the few negatives about canyon living... allergies...when it blooms here, boy does it bloom. That and the fact that everything gets dirty fairly quickly (especially...ehem...freshly washed cars & freshly swept pathways).  I suppose it's a fair compromise for living in such a beautiful place.

I've been trying to stick to my plan by wearing lighter hues so perhaps I'm willing it to be spring with my secret powers? and speaking of powers... I decided, on a whim, to dust off my flower crown - wearing it always makes me feel a bit magical. It has made a few appearances on this blog which you may or may not remember and here it is again.
outfit details:

get back to the garden

This week I will be posting some of my favorite spring 2011 looks from several designers.  I thought I'd start with these wonderful Polaroids which Boy by Band of Outsiders posted of their spring lookbook. They star the always adorable Kirsten Dunst...

a self-made gal

Before I left for NYC I had been digging through my closet looking for things to take with me. In the process I came across this dress I made a few years ago from an over-sized vintage paisley blouse.  I guess "made" is a strong word but I did sew more shape into it and took in the sleeves - I wore it quite a bit when I first made it but I had almost forgotten about it...
I would love to be more sewing savy and make more of my own unique items but I never seem to have to time and motivation it takes!  That's something I should work on.

I'll be back soon with an NYFW update. Meanwhile, the clothes horse posted a photo of my outift yesterday on her blog, if you are curious.

it's just a little rain...

I must not have been paying any attention to the weather forecast because the rain on Sunday caught me completely off guard.  I love the rain usually but since I spent the whole of last weekend in the snow, I was ready for some sun. hmm...sounds like a spoiled Californian, doesn't it! Luckily, I just reached for one of the Brit's plaid scarves, my trusty old wellies and an umbrella - then I went about my business.

You can't see them very well here but this sweater has cute little elbow patches and it's definitely going into heavy rotation!

Fingers crossed, I'll get my sunshine tomorrow...

DROWN the DOLLS

It has been far too long since my last art related post and I am a little bit ashamed about this fact. But fear not, I came across these oil paintings by Daena Tetle and I knew they were destined for a post.  I love underwater photos so why not paintings of people and things underwater! better yet, why not  paintings of barbie dolls underwater?!

snow bunny

Just to prove that I do occasionally engage in physical activity...me in my ski gear. The sun always seems twice as bright when snow is on the ground, so sorry for the squinting eyes!

Have a wonderful day! Hmm...Is this week dragging for anyone else? It must be the first week back blues!

musical notes:
I love the Neil Young song anyway but this is an interesting little stop motion video. song covered by Laura Marling...

Have a wonderful weekend, lovely people! Spend it cuddled up with some tea (or coffee) and a blanket or someone you love (or both). Stay warm if it is cold where ever this has found you! Winter is here.
